Throughout my career, I have worked at the intersection of these three disciplines, exploring the natural world, human society and the scientific ideas that will shape our future.
My professional journey has taken me from scientific research and environmental fieldwork to nearly four decades in journalism and authorship. Whether conducting laboratory research, studying marine ecosystems, investigating alternative energy technologies or communicating science to a global audience, my goal has always been the same: to understand complex subjects and explain them with clarity, accuracy and intellectual honesty.
I began my scientific career in marine biology, carrying out field research in marine ecology and marine microbiology in the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea. I later worked for four years in biotechnology research laboratories, investigating biological systems at the molecular level. Over the past decade, my scientific interests have expanded to include biofuels, renewable technologies and alternative energy systems, reflecting a broader interest in sustainable solutions to the environmental challenges facing our planet.
Alongside my scientific career, I have spent almost thirty years in journalism, including more than two decades with the BBC, where I have specialised in communicating complex scientific, technological and global issues for an international audience. My work has combined editorial leadership with a commitment to accuracy, critical thinking and public understanding.
As an author, I write narrative non-fiction that combines scientific evidence with compelling storytelling. My books examine evolution, ecology, biodiversity, climate change, energy, technology and humanity’s place within the natural world. They are written for readers who value curiosity, evidence and thoughtful exploration over simplistic answers.
I also write fiction, essays and poetry, exploring many of the same questions through different forms of storytelling.
